Hemp, a Himalayan
mountain nettle, has been a basic raw material
for making most of the textiles needed by
a household in the mountain regions of Nepal.
Gathering the nettle takes place at the
end of the monsoon seasons and often all
the villagers go off to higher altitudes
for days at a time, making a festival occasion
of harvest. Stinging thorns on stems and
leaves make the collection hazardous. The
process separating the fiber from the bark
is laborious and time-consuming. It involves
many different materials, with different
designs are prepared. Hemp material is very
durable, wind proof and attractive.
